dc.description.abstract | The United Nations defines violence against women as "any act of gender-based violence that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts as coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.’’ The purpose of this study was to establish factors influencing domestic violence against women in Kisumu County. Simple random sampling technique was employed to 121 respondents who were reporting to GBV clinic. The data on the questionnaires was extracted as per the codes and keyed in the computer for analysis using Excel. Descriptive statistic that included frequencies, tables and percentages were used. Cultural norms and traditional gender roles were identified as significant contributors. Socioeconomic factors, including unemployment (25.9%) and low income (30.2% earning below Ksh10,000), exacerbated vulnerability to abuse. Behavioral triggers, such as frequent aggression (34.5%) and substance abuse (47.5% reporting frequent or very frequent occurrences). The study concluded that domestic violence in Kisumu County is pervasive and rooted in cultural, economic, and psychological factors. Long-term monitoring and community engagement are essential to address this persistent issue effectively. This research underscored the urgent need for multi-sectorial approaches to protect women and foster healthier, equitable household dynamics in Kisumu County. | en_US |
