FACTORS INFLUENCING ADHERENCE TO IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULE AMONG CHILDREN ATTENDING THE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CLINIC AT SIAYA COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL
Abstract
Immunization is a crucial component of child health and plays a significant role in reducing morbidity and mortality rates associated with vaccine-preventable diseases (MOH., 2022). However, adherence to immunization schedules remains a challenge in many developing countries, including Kenya. According to the 2014 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, 76% of babies in Kenya had received their vaccinations. Increasing immunization compliance is a crucial step in lowering morbidity and death from childhood vaccine-preventable illnesses. This research proposal aims to investigate the factors influencing non-adherence to the immunization schedule among children attending the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Clinic in Siaya County referral hospital. The study utilized a cross-sectional study design using quantitative data collection methods; surveys and use of a questionnaire to gather information from the respondents. The study findings emphasize on the previously pointed out issues concerning the socioeconomic status of the respondents, their cultural beliefs, understanding of the need for immunization and the favorable healthcare factors that promote adherence to immunization. Of concern is the receiving area of their children which has been recommended to be looked into. Among other recommendations is the continuous health education and vaccine campaigns to pass across the appropriate information.
