i PREVELANCE, DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF PEADETRIC NEOPLASMS AT JARAMOGI OGINGA ODINGA TEACHING AND REFFERAL HOSPITAL KISUMU KENYA
Abstract
Childhood cancer is the sixth leading cause of total cancer burden globally and the ninth leading
cause of childhood disease burden globally. 82.2% of global childhood cancer occurs in low-
middle or middle socio-demographic index locations. Studies shows that by 2050, almost 50%
of the global cancer burden in children younger than 15 years will be in Africa and this is
mainly due to socio-economic status. In Kenya, there are about 3,000 new cases of childhood
x
cancer diagnosed each year. Majority of new diagnosis of pediatric cancer are reported in
developing countries, where survival rate range from 5% to 25% with 80% in developed
countries. This study evaluated prevalence, diagnosis and management of cancers among the
pediatric patients at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital. This was a
retrospective study between August 2017 – August 2024. The study design adopted a cross-
sectional descriptive approach to data collection, analysis and presentation. Findings from this
research will be used to improve diagnosis and management of pediatric cancer cases hence
reducing cancer death among pediatric patients
