FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO DELAYED DIAGNOSIS OF CERVICAL CANCER KISUMU COUNTY; A CASE STUDY OF JARAMOGI OGINGA ODINGA TEACHING AND REFFERAL HOSPITAL
Abstract
This research proposal aimed to investigate the factors contributing to delayed diagnosis of cervical cancer in Kisumu County; Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). Cervical cancer is a major health concern in Kenya and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Despite efforts to promote screening and early detection, many cases are still diagnosed at late stages, reducing the chances of successful treatment leading to high mortality and morbidity rates. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, qualitative and quantitative approach; including questionnaires, interviews, and medical record reviews. The primary objective was to identify the socio-economic, age and stage at diagnosis and health system-related factors that contribute to delayed diagnosis in Kisumu County. The results of this study were expected to inform the development of targeted interventions to improve early detection and treatment of cervical cancer in Kisumu County JOOTRH and other similar setting. The study was discussed in JOOTRH research board committee and a data collection approval letter was issued. Most of the patients believed that ca cervix is not curable that was 57.5%, 22.5 believe it’s due to witchcraft and 20% hold other beliefs. Most frequent stage at diagnosis was stage 2 at 57.5% followed by stage 1 at 42.5% and stage 3 at 20% and the least stage 4%. In conclusion the study showed a great impact on social demographics factors in relation to factors contributing to delayed diagnosis of cervical cancer in Kisumu County; JOOTRH where age, education, beliefs, religion and marital status shows a significant impact on reproductive health seeking behavior leading to delayed diagnosis of cervical cancer. The study recommends creation of more awareness over cervical ca among the community members across all age groups and religious denominations.
