dc.description.abstract | HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, is a serious health concern that has impacted communities around the world, including Kenya. Since the first cases of HIV were reported in Kenya in the 1980s, the virus has become a significant public health issue in the country, with substantial implications for individuals, families, and communities. HIV has become a threat to the human quality of life, especially in young individuals living with the disease. As of 2023, it was estimated that roughly 1 million adolescents aged 15-19 were living with this condition globally. This estimate puts it at about 3% of all people living with HIV infection. Most of these HIV cases are in Sub-Saharan Africa at roughly 84%.
A cross-sectional research design was employed, using quantitative analysis to collect data targeted at 100 adolescents within the specified age range residing in Kisumu County. The sample size was calculated based on Araoye’s (2004) formula. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 29.0, with results presented in tables and figures.
The findings reveal that [HIV/AIDs influence physical health outcomes in children living with the condition, and the debilitating condition influences the prevalence of opportunistic infections, growth, and development. The mental health and psychosocial well-being of the young adults living with HIV/AIDs are actually influenced by the latter. Depression, anxiety, and stigma are common among these young adolescents living with HIV. The study found the intervention and support system in promoting the overall health and well-being of the young adults with HIV in Kisumu County Hospital to be satisfactory and well adequate
In conclusion, it is seen that the mental health and physical health of young adults living with HIV/AIDs are significantly influenced by the condition and the community’s perception. The interventions at Kisumu County Hospital are well done, and this helps the individuals struggling to get assistance.
Key recommendations include enhancing mental health support for adolescents living with HIV/AIDs: measures should be put in place to strengthen mental health services provided at KCH to address the high prevalence of emotional difficulties as seen in the study. | en_US |
