dc.description.abstract | Background information: Internet use has been growing rapidly over time. Its use has expanded to cover the entire globe in the past few years. Currently, millions of people are already connected with utilization of social media for various reasons. Utilization of social media has greatly expanded especially among students of tertiary institutions. This study determines utilization of social media among medical students at Uzima University including common social media sites that students prefer, reasons for using the above-preferred sites as well as the challenges they face. Social media use entails connecting with people through virtual platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Tik Tok.
Study objective: the study was focused on assessing use of social media among students at faculty of health sciences, with a particular emphasis on the most commonly used social media sites, the reasons for using the above sites, and the challenges that students face while using these social media sites.
Methodology: The research was carried out at Uzima University’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) (UU). Simple random sample procedure will be used to include all students who match the inclusion requirements. The questionnaires were given by researchers and included both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Data was gathered using online surveys that will be shared with students who consent to participate in the research. The data was analyzed using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software version 27. The analytical approach was also employed to examine the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The outcome of the research was shown using charts, tables among others. The findings of this study will be submitted to the project supervisor. Copies of the study will be shared with the UU libraries and scientific conferences. This research attempted to determine use of social media among students of tertiary institutions with the focus being on the commonly used social media sites or applications as well as the reasons for the use of the above-preferred sites and the challenges encountered by students while using the sites. The study's findings will assist to address the gap created by past research on the topic of social media use by university students. The work was submitted to board school of Nursing for approval.
Expected outcome: this study helped in understanding and knowing the milestone that has been made by learners utilizing media digital media platforms in tertiary institutions as well as consequences of engaging in media by students. This will therefore enable the management and the government to set up laws which regulate the utilization of digital media platforms to benefit learners.
